Mollywood shifts focus on sports

Athletics will soon get an onscreen boost. As the London Olympics approaches, Mollywood is also gearing up to embrace athletics with Shanker Ramakrishnan-Rajesh Pillai duo's Gold.
The female-centric film tells the story of Kerala's young female athletes who represent the country at national events, says scribe Shanker. "More than the sport itself, it's about the dynamics of the people involved in it. It tells the background story of how they are found, trained and taken to the centre-stage to achieve global fame," he says, adding that it celebrates the victory of human will.
Ko fame Karthika will star in the film that also has Parvathi Menon playing one of the lead roles. The flick, inspired by Kerala's celebrated athletes, features a stellar supporting cast including Prithviraj, Fahad Fazil, Anoop Menon and Kunchacko Boban.
The buzz is that the film will also have several scenes shot at a prominent international sports event.
After Shah Rukh Khan played hockey coach in B'wood's Chak De, director V K Prakash plans a sport-based film in Mollywood.
Although the National Award-winning director's Beautiful was a box office hit, his latest release, Karmayogi, was not well-received by the Malayali audience. Now, he is trying his luck with a new sports-based theme.
"Mammootty will play a volleyball coach," says the director. "Sport is a theme that I haven't attempted on screen before. So it's going to be a new experience for me," he says.
While the director is yet to decide on the title, the film's script has been written by Y V Rajesh. "Mammootty was quite impressed with the script and so he immediately agreed to be a part of the project. The shoot for the film will begin by August this year," says a source.
