South Indian stars off to Bollywood

Posted on 00:26 by pollard

It couldn’t have been a better calling for actor Prithviraj. The newly-wed Malayalam actor has lady luck shining on him and how. Barely two days after his wedding, Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap confirmed Prithviraj’s much speculated debut in Bollywood — believe it or not — with Rani Mukerji as his co-star.

Anurag, who himself has been busy since he’s tying the knot this weekend, told us, “This untitled production will be directed by Sachin Kundalkar. Prithviraj will indeed be making his debut with this film. Rani Mukerji will co-star alongside him.” Sachin has so far directed some award-winning short films.

Anurag, who is currently working on his next film, Gangs Of Wasseypur, says, “This film is scheduled to take off sometime in September. We’re waiting for Prithviraj to finish the Malayalam films that he’s given nod to before us before we start off.”

Prithviraj, whose Bollywood debut has been on the cards for a while, had initially denied reports of him starring in this film.

“Prithviraj did not want to confirm until everything was finalised. He is a little superstitious that way, where he doesn’t talk about his newer projects until they go on floors,” says a source close to him.

It is also learnt that Mukerjeeshould mostly be done with her commitments towards Reema Kagti’s Zakhmi alongside Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor by September. Let’s wait and see how this new pair sizzles on screen.

I could play hero for the next 50 years: Prithviraj

Posted on 00:07 by pollard

Prithviraj seems confident of an acting career that is bound to span several coming decades. The actor has said, that he could play the hero for another 50 years, given the general trend in Malayalam cinema.

Prithvi was talking at a press conference that was organized to promote his new film 'Manikyakallu'.

Prithvi said that the film, that has been well appreciated, had some inherent goodness in it, and hence he had decided to be a part of it. When asked about the reasons for making his marriage an absolutely private affair, Prithvi explained that he didn't want his wife, who is a reporter with the BBC to be troubled because of her husband's star status, when she would be in Kerala to cover the state assembly election news. Also, he added that he wanted to get married before his father's photograph, and hence decided that the wedding would be a very private affair.

When quizzed if he thought that his market value has sunk post-marriage, Prithvi said that no such thing has happened. Actress Samvrutha Sunil and director Mohanan also took part in the press conference

Prithviraj Eyes Five-Decade Acting Career

Posted on 02:25 by pollard

"For a person like me, who began this profession at the age of 17 will help me in achieving a five-decade acting career," said Prithviraj, who is known as action hero.

"I got the label of an action hero following two of my recent films - 'Urumi' and 'Anwar'. Incidentally, my latest film 'Manikyakalu' which was released on May 5 has been getting an excellent response. The collection is going up every day, according to the collection report that comes from the theatres," added the 27-year-old, who has acted in more than 65 films.

The heartthrob of Malayalam films surprised many when he tied the knot with Mumbai-based journalist Supriya Menon last month. More so because just before the marriage he had denied any such plans in an interview to a reputed language magazine.

When asked about that, he said: "The interviewer asked me about my marriage plans with a journalist Pratheksha Menon and I flatly denied it. By denying it, I don't think that I did any wrong because I was not going to marry a person with such a name."

His love life was a closely guarded secret because Supriya works as a journalist with BBC and he wanted to keep her away from the spotlight.

"We did not want her pictures to be splashed in film magazines because it would have affected her profession. And the reason for keeping my marriage function a private affair was because I wanted it that way," said Prithviraj.

Son of late actor Sukumaran and actress Mallika, Prithviraj made a successful debut with 'Nandanam' in 2002 and went on to give blockbusters like 'Swapnakoodu' (2003), 'Classmates' (2006), 'Thirakkatha' (2008) and 'Urumi' (2011). His notable Tamil films are 'Kana Kandaen' (2005) and 'Mozhi' (2007).

Santosh Sivan's Urumi gets an international version

Posted on 22:25 by pollard

Santosh Sivan's tri-lingual (Malayalam-Hindi-English) historical epic Urumi has just got a new twist in its tale. Having completed and released the lengthy Malayalam version with songs, dances, drama and action, Sivan is now doing an English-language version, which would not only be discernibly shorter but also contain extra characters and most, importantly, would give a completely new perspective on Vasco Da Gama's invasion of India.

Additionally, according to information available with Businessofcinema.com, the item songs by Tabu and Vidya Balan are being done away in the English version of the tale.

Sivan says, “Yes, we're working on an English version of Urumi, which would be of course much shorter — approximately 110 minutes, as compared with the Malayalam version, which is 2 hours 45 minutes long — and with different content. I wouldn't like to speak much on the English version at the moment because it's still work in progress.”

Prod him further to ask if Vidya Balan and Tabu's item songs that were shot with so much fanfare are being abandoned in the English version of Urumi, and Sivan informs, “We're retaining Vidya's song because it's an integral part of the narrative but Tabu's song may go. I've ideologically opposed our song-and-dance formula for an international audience. But Urumi is a subject that is inherently Indian in a flamboyant and dramatic way. It is formatted as fable. I want to retain that flavour for the English version. There are traditional devices in my film from Indian folklore-like characters singing in the ballad style that I would like to take to the Western audience.”

The cinematographer-filmmaker is convinced the Western audience is open to songs and dances. “Provided they are integral to the plot, why not? It's when our protagonists in Indian films start singing in their fancy jeans and jackets that the Western audience gets tickled.”

Sivan says the main difference between the Indian and the international version of Urumi is in the perspective. “So far Vasco da Gama has been seen as a discoverer. The English version of my film will show him as an invader, and a savage one at that. Do you know that da Gama went to brutal lengths to keep the Muslim traders out of the pepper trade? At that time pepper was as precious as petrol in world trade. To maintain a Portuguese monopoly on pepper trade from Kerala, da Gama went to brutal limits. When a Brahmin priest was sent to him for negotiation he cut off the priest's ear. This is a side of Vasco da Gama that I'll show to the West for the first time.”

The Malayalam version will be much gentler on da Gama's character. Interestingly, Sivan is undecided on the version of Urumi that he'll show to the Hindi audiences. “It could be a blend of the Malayalam and English version. That whole perspective on Vasco Da Gama as an invader and plunderer that I'm doing in the English version makes for some visually stunning drama which I want the national audience to see. The English version will also have several added Caucasian characters besides da Gama.”

Sivan is undecided on where the international version of Urumi would be premiered. “I have offers from several international festivals. I'm yet to take a call. Like I said, the English version is not fully complete yet.”

The film's script was sponsored and approved by the Hongkong International Film Festival, though Sivan is not obligated to let Hong Kong have the first dekko of his film.
